How to Create a WordPress Website Step-by-Step

WordPress may not have pioneered content management systems (CMS), but it certainly popularized the concept and paved the way for many others in the process. Having launched in 2003, WordPress has come a long way as a CMS. It is now incorporated by small businesses and huge enterprises alike. If you’re looking to create a website for yourself but do not possess web design or development skills, WordPress is your friend. Continue reading to learn the steps you must take to build your own website within minutes.

Select and Register a Name for Your Site

A domain name does not just give your site identity and an address, but it’s also your brand. Therefore, choose a name that’s representative of your business or service. It should be short, easy to recollect, and yet unique. Since there are millions of sites already registered, you may not find common names up for grabs. However, if you do some brainstorming, you should be able to zero in on a pretty decent name for your site.

Sign Up for Hosting

A domain name gives your site identity; hosting gives it visibility. In other words, it takes your site online. WordPress offers you free hosting. But if you are serious about your site, you must look for paid hosting services, such as Bluehost. Bluehost offers a range of hosting plans – pretty much all of them come with unlimited disk storage and bandwidth. Since your website is WordPress-based, Bluehost would be ideal as its library has the WordPress script. Start with a basic hosting plan. Once you scale up or your hosting requirements increase, you may upgrade to the more advanced plans.

Connecting Your Domain

After having signed up for hosting, connect your domain to the web host. You will need account login data and nameserver information for this purpose. Then go to your website name registrar and link the nameserver information to your site name. This tells your domain registrar where your domain must point to.

Installing WordPress

As aforementioned, Bluehost lets you quickly upload your WordPress website to your host. Log into your Bluehost account and look for the WordPress script, which is usually in the cPanel. Once you locate the script, click on Install. During the installation, you would also be providing your blog name, admin name, and email, which comes included with WordPress. Once done, you would receive the freshly created WordPress site’s link along with a password. You may change the password.

Install a Theme

Get familiar with the WordPress dashboard. If it’s your first time, it might seem a bit overwhelming. However, it’s not that bad. You just need to spend some time to know it better. WordPress offers multiple default themes. If you’d like something else, browse the theme library for loads more. Whether you go default or pick one up from the library, you can always customize the theme to make it look your own. You can even buy themes from outside the library. The options are simply galore.

During the theme installation process, you will get to know about plugins, widgets, and a host of other WordPress elements that can further enhance the look and function of your site. Not to mention, applying the various elements entails basic drag-and-drop functions that you do at the backend of your site.

Add Content

Before you add blog posts or publish articles, get the basic pages done. These include you’re About Us, Contact, and other pages you may like to have. If you plan to run a static site, you can choose the page that shows when someone visits the home page of your site. If you would be uploading fresh posts on a regular basis, you may keep the default setting so that your latest posts show on the home page.
